Behind the Scenes of the Washington Post-Schar School Polls

Body

As Election Day draws near and the campaigns for Congressional and Senate offices heat up, the Washington Post-Schar School national polls help put the somewhat chaotic political horizon into focus. This is the second year the newspaper and the Schar School of Policy and Government have partnered on polls; a new video created by George Mason University explains how the partnership came into being, with the idea of “elevating the quality of public discourse,” according to Schar School Dean Mark J. Rozell.

Since the publication of the latest poll in the Washington Post on October 8, dozens of major mainstream media outlets around the country have cited the results in news stories and columns of opinion. That’s not surprising, given that the findings indicated that likely voters in 69 battleground House districts narrowly prefer Democratic candidates.

The poll, rich with new data and copiously illustrated with infographics, was conducted in a multi-format method that reached 2,672 registered voters by phone and by mail. A Post story explaining the methodology is here.

Election Day is Tuesday, November 6.
